INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)

What is INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION (IUI)?

  • Involves placing sperm into the female’s uterus through an assisted medical process
  • The procedure is done around the time of ovulation to give the best chance of conception
  • Hormonal medications might be used in conjunction with the treatment to enhance conditions for a pregnancy (Ovulation Induction)
  • IUI is usually one of the first techniques used to assist a couple having difficulty becoming pregnant
  • Very common used in infertility due to erectile dysfunction or coital disorders with normal semen parameters.

What are the benefits of IUI?

  • During normal intercourse, only relatively small numbers of sperm make it to the woman’s uterus
  • IUI inserts concentrated amounts of the best performing prepared and washed sperms directly into a woman’s uterus thus increasing the chance of fertilization.

When is IUI not suitable?

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tube
  • Ovarian failure (menopause)
  • Severe male factor infertility, i.e. very low sperm count, poor sperm motility, sperm defects
  • Severe endometriosis
  • A female partner over the age of 40
  • Previous failed fertilization in IVF/ICSI.

How is IUI Performed?

IUI Success Rates

  • The success rates for IUI will vary depending on a number of factors including the number of cycle attempts and maternal age

What’s Next?

  • Depending on your circumstances and your doctor’s advice, you might start with natural cycles and move on to three or four cycles of hormone medication & IUI. (pregnancy rate is higher with stimulated cycles than natural cycles)
  • If this is not successful, then your doctor may recommend in vitro fertilisation (IVF) – where the egg and sperm are fertilized outside the body and then transferred to the uterus

Coping with stress?

  • Talk to your partner, join support groups and take help of counsellors
